According to Dominican Today, Matty Alou (pictured in the center) has passed away in Miami at the age of 72.
For those of you who might not know a whole lot about Matty Alou and his brothers, a bit of background from Baseball-Reference:
Matty Alou played fifteen seasons in the major leagues with a lifetime batting average of .307, earned during the second dead-ball era. He led the National League in batting in 1966, was third in 1967, second in 1968, and fourth in batting in 1969. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates all of those years. When he hit .332 in 1968, it was the heart of the second dead-ball era and the league as a whole hit only .243.
Part of one of the great baseball families of all-time, Alou had the almost unique distinction of being teammates with his brothers Felipe Alou and Jesus Alou with the San Francisco Giants in 1963. In one game, all three Alou brothers started in the same Giants’ outfield. He is also the uncle of major league outfielder Moises Alou and minor leaguers Felipe Alou Jr. and Jose Alou.
Growing up, I loved reading stories about the Alou brothers and seeing photos of the three of them playing together. It was always fun when all three would appear together at Giants games.
Very sad news.

About

I love the San Francisco Giants, and sometimes they actually love me back (like when they finally won the WORLD SERIES!) I cope with our often stormy relationship the best way I can ... with snark.
